Have you ever wondered why mosquito bites itch? This is because when a female mosquito bites you, she introduces protein and enzymes into the skin. This causes our skin to numb making the blood flow easily.

After our body is aware of these enzymes, it automatically gives off antibodies and histamines as a means of protecting itself from the antigens the mosquito secreted. Technically speaking, these histamines actually cause the itch, not the mosquito itself.

There are a number of ways to treat mosquito bites. Household remedies include taking a hot shower or applying hot compress on the area. Applying oils like lavender, tea tree or cedar oils directly into the bite area also relieves the itch. However, there are concerns that repeated use of these oils especially on children and teens might not be good.

Also applying a paste form of baking soda and water into the area is another method. When home remedies don’t work, there are also a wide range of commercial products available on the market today that treat mosquito sting such as oral histamine or topical lotions and creams mainly to relieve itching and allergy.

While itching can be irritating, there are other far greater worries that are associated with mosquito bites. Mosquitoes are carriers of deadly diseases. Once bitten by infected mosquitoes, a person is susceptible to many mosquito-borne diseases like yellow fever, malaria and dengue fever among others. These mosquito-borne diseases account for over one million deaths every year worldwide.

This explains why proper mosquito control is necessary. As what they say, prevention is better than cure. The best thing to do is to eliminate if not control the culprit. With the proliferation of various products today, mosquito control systems are no longer difficult.

These products range from mosquito repellent to mosquito traps to mosquito misting systems. While repellents like lotions, creams and mosquito spray are helpful, consumers should be wary of products that contain DEET as this has been found out to have adverse effects on the body. Look for repellents with organic ingredients that are just as effective but safe for both for animals and humans.

Mosquito control equipment on the other hand includes products like SkeeterVac, Mega-Catch and Mosquito Magnet and the AllClear Mosquito mister among others. They are extremely helpful and highly effective in reducing mosquito population. Their efficiency, however largely hinges on their proper usage.
